Plat-Admn-202 App Customization: What Salesforce Actually Tests and What You Can Safely Skip
App Customization is one of those exam topics that looks straightforward on the surface.
Custom objects. Page layouts. Record types. You have probably worked with all of these. You feel comfortable. You think you know this section.
And then the exam asks you a scenario question, and two answer choices both seem completely correct.
That is the App Customization trap. And this post will help you avoid it completely.
What App Customization Actually Means on the Exam
App Customization on the Plat-Admn-202 covers how you build and configure applications in Salesforce without writing code. It makes up 13% of your total exam score.
The four areas you need to focus on are:
Custom Objects and Fields, Record Types, Page Layouts, Apps and Tabs.
Each one sounds simple. But the exam tests the relationships between them and the specific rules that govern how they work together. That is where candidates lose marks.
Custom Objects and Fields: What You Must Know
A Custom Object is any object you create in Salesforce that does not come out of the box. Think of it as a custom database table built specifically for your business needs.
Custom Fields extend both standard and custom objects. The exam tests which field types are available, when to use each one and what limitations apply.
The field types that appear most on the Plat-Admn-202 are Formula Fields, Roll-Up Summary Fields, Lookup Fields and Master-Detail Fields. You already know Formula and Roll-Up Summary from the Business Logic section. In the App Customization exam, the focus is more on relationship fields and when to use Lookup versus Master-Detail.
The critical difference: Master-Detail establishes a tight parent-child relationship in which the child cannot exist without the parent. Lookup creates a loose relationship where the child can exist independently. This distinction appears in exam scenarios constantly.
Record Types: The Most Tested Concept in This Section
Record Types are the most heavily tested App Customization concept on the Plat-Admn-202. Get comfortable with them before exam day.
A Record Type allows you to offer different business processes, page layouts and picklist values to different users based on their profile: one object, multiple experiences.
What the exam specifically tests about Record Types:
Record Types are assigned to users through their Profile or Permission Set. Different Record Types on the same object can show different Page Layouts. Different Record Types can have different picklist values. Record Types control which Sales Process or Support Process is used on Opportunity and Case objects.
The scenario you will almost certainly see: A company has two sales teams. One sells products, and the other sells services. They use the same Opportunity object but need different fields and stages visible to each team. What do you use?
The answer is Record Types combined with Page Layouts and Sales Processes. Know exactly how these three work together, and you will handle this scenario confidently.
Page Layouts: What They Control and What They Do Not
Page Layouts control what fields, related lists, buttons and custom links appear on a record page. They also control which fields are required or read-only on that specific layout.
Here is what catches candidates out: Page Layouts control the arrangement and visibility of fields. They do not control whether a user can actually edit a field. Field-level security on Profiles and Permission Sets controls that. This distinction is a favorite exam trap.
If a question asks how to prevent a specific user from editing a field, the answer is Field Level Security, not Page Layout. If a question asks how to hide a field from a page without removing access entirely, Page Layout is your tool.
Know the difference cold.
Apps and Tabs: What You Can Safely Skip
Apps and Tabs are the lowest tested area within App Customization. A Salesforce App is simply a collection of tabs. A Tab provides a user interface for an object.
You need to know the basic concepts, but this area will not make or break your exam score. Understand that Custom Apps can be created in App Manager, that Lightning Apps differ from Classic Apps and that Object Tabs can be set to Default On, Default Off or Hidden per profile.
Beyond that, your study time is better spent on Record Types and the distinction between Lookup and Master-Detail relationships.
How to Practice This the Right Way
App Customization questions on the Plat-Admn-202 are almost always scenario-based. You will not be asked to define a Record Type. You will be given a business requirement and asked which combination of tools solves it.
The only way to get comfortable with this is to practice with real exam-style questions. If you want to test yourself right now, these Free Plat-Admn-202 exam questions cover App Customization and every other topic area, so you can find your gaps before exam day finds them for you.
Your App Customization Checklist
Before you move on, make sure you can answer these without hesitation.
When do you use Master-Detail instead of Lookup? How are Record Types assigned to users? What is the difference between Page Layout field settings and Field Level Security? Can two Record Types on the same object show different picklist values?
If any of those made you pause, go back and review before your exam date.
Ready for the Next Topic?
App Customization is done. You now know exactly what Salesforce tests and what you can confidently deprioritize.
The next section is User Interface and Lightning App Builder. It is lighter, but it has grown with every Salesforce release. Do not skip it.
